Rodger Nale says, I WAS IN THE HOOTCH, although not in the room that was hit, and certainly not conscious (at least awake) when the attack started. (see my pictures of the damaged latrine, hangar area, tail boom and horizontal stabilizer, and "do not destroy" canister). |

Photos of the aftermath of a mid air collision that happened in mid 1965 at Vi Tanh. We were on a CA out of Vi Tanh, carrying ARVN troops, we had already made a couple of lifts to the LZ, when we were taking off on another troop lift, the aircraft in front of us apparently lost power or lift and we ran into the tail boom/tail rotor of that aircraft. The photos show the result of that collision, my guess is that we were 25 to 50 feet in the air. I was AC on this mission and Jerry "Rip" Ireland was my Pilot, Jerry was flying at the time, we had just switched off, since I had flown the previous lift. The aircraft that we hit was from the 121st, I don't remember the crew member's names. There were no American casualties, but a bunch of ARVNs were killed and injured, both aircraft had full loads and there were troops lined up along the road getting ready for the next lift. |

The top left photo shows the Warrior A/C upside down, with me still in it, the rest of the crew had already evacuated the aircraft, the top right photo shows the AC still upside down, and I'm still trapped inside, with some one trying to help, the bottom left photo shows the "Flying Tiger" A/C that we hit, the bottom right photo show me leaving the area at high speed, having finally freed myself from the cockpit. Jerry Ireland is standing with his back to the camera, I don't know who the crew member is trying to move the troops back (By the way, the engine is still running, and the fuel cell is now above it!). |

The top photo is Ron Crotty, right the guy on the left holding the flag is Charlie Poulton. I (Dion) can remember the incident where the two guys dropped down and grabbed the enemy flag.
In lower picture.
I can't remember his real name but his nick name was WORM. Why we called him that I don't know. This was his second tour. His first tour was in 1964 at a Plei Ku (sp). He was an Armorer as I recall. That's the only picture I've ever seen of WORM. Like I said I can't remember his real name. He had beet red hair.
