After Action Report:
Arrived on Thursday afternoon just minuets before the Morris’s. The weather could not have been better.
We settled down with Bob and Courtnay, Bob and Nancy and the girls to a fine meal. Later we all sat around the fire pit and caught up on all the latest gossip since Ft. Campbell. Next morning Milo Overstreet and Jim Morgan arrived. It was a pleasure to finally fit the face with the name. Even thought they are slightly elderly they fit right in with us younger Comancheros. Two fine gentlemen. First time together for Bob, Milo and Jim since Bob’s fixed wing mishap.
Just shortly after noon young Mr. Sexton showed. Steve was white on top but really hasn’t changed that much, still towered over me. Before every one migrated back to the cabin we had the opportunity to catch up on the last thirty years. Marty and Judy arrived with the now famous pasta pot. Pam and Larry Cooper along with son Mike and friend Nick stopped by with a wonderful 101st cake. They were on their way home after spending time at Myrtle Beach. Friday evening’s meal was “Pig and Pasta”. Bob supplied the pig and had one of the camper prepare it in his portable spit and smoker. The pig, who Patrick named
“Lucky” was stuffed with sauerkraut and kielbasa. Made me feel right at home. Sweet corn finished that course. Next came Marty’s pasta and meatballs and all topped off with Pam’s cake. Later that evening Bob treated us all to a giant bond fire up on the hill.
Saturday found the women shopping at the “Shaker Festival” while the guys stayed back and caught up on all the stories and lies from the WAR. JJ and Barbara arrived about mid-afternoon. My son Patrick was given the task to dig post holes for the flag pole and sign that were to be erected that afternoon at Demsey Field. About 5PM we all made the pilgrimage to the field for the dedication. The evening was capped at the TV watching videos of the “Trip Back” and presenting JJ with his very own birthday cake.
Sunday started with a superb breakfast at Spiniker’s, compliments of JJ. Just after breakfast we all said good-by to Steve. Sunday afternoon, most of the contingent cruised the lake on a pontoon boat.
Sunday nights Last Supper was “clean the fridge “, and recoup. We all said our good-bys to JJ and Barbara who want to get a head start on the trip back to Nashville.
Monday morning started with a long leisurely breakfast at Courtnays trailer. Patrick and I said good-by to Courtnay and the Morris’s, paid homage to Bob and began the long ride home.
It was a pleasure to meet Milo and Jim, seeing Steve again and catching up with Bob, Bob, Marty, Larry and JJ. I thank you all for giving my son the opportunity to meet such guys.
Special thanks must go to Courtnay and Nancy for keeping the table full and the coffee hot.
