Accident Summary:
THE PILOT AND THREE PASSENGERS DEPARTED CAMP EVANS, REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM AT 1000 HOURS, 17 MARCH 1971 ENROUTE TO CAMP EAGLE, REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM. ARRIVING AT CAMP EAGLE ONE PASSENGER WAS DROPPED OFF AND AND THE AIRCRAFT PROCEEDED TO DA NANG, REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM AND ARRIVED AT APPROXIMATELY 1200 HOURS. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED DA NANG, REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM AT APPROXIMATELY 1500 HOURS ENROUTE TO CAMP EVANS, REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM. AT APPROXIMATELY 1515 HOURS THE AIRCRAFT WAS CRUISING AT 900 TO 1000 FEET AND 85-90 KNOTS WHEN THE AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED SEVERE YAW TO THE RIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 35 DEGREES. THE PILOT COMPENSATED BY REDUCING THROTTLE AND THE NOSE BEGAN TO COME BACK TO THE LEFT AND THE PILOT THEN ENTERED AUTOROTATION. UPON INITIAL CONTACT WITH THE GROUND THE AIRCRAFT WAS MOVING FORWARD AT APPROXIMATELY 10 KNOTS ESTIMATED AIRSPEED. THE AIRCRAFT PROCEEDED APPROXIMATELY 15 FEET SLOWLY VEERING TO THE RIGHT. THE FRONT PORTION OF THE SKID BROKE OFF CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT SKID TO DIG INTO THE GROUND CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO FLIP ON ITS RIGHT SIDE WITH THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT POSITIONED APPROXIMATELY 80 TO THE LEFT OF THE DIRECTION OF INITIAL FLIGHT PATH. AFTER IMPACT, ALL THREE PERSONNEL EXITED THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE LEFT SIDE. IT WAS NOT UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 1630 THAT THE PILOT AND PASSENGERS WERE SIGHTED BY A VIETNAMESE AIR FORCE HELICOPTER AND PICKED UP AS THE PILOT HAD NO SURVIVAL RADIO.\\
